Use a putty knife to spread the tar into the leaking hole on the inside of your roof. For example soak the downhill side of a chimney first then each side then the top on both sides. Heavy waterproof tarps are an excellent temporary method to fix more substantial areas of a leaking roof and one of the easiest too. Make a temporary patch with roofing tar and a piece of shingle or plywood.

Right now the best bet may be to try and stop the flow of water but save fixing the problem until later. If a leak is difficult to find enlist a helper and go up on the roof with a garden hose. Make a temporary leak patch once you ve found the leak you can make a temporary leak patch from some plywood or shingle and some roofing tar. Tarping is a great way to do this and acts as a good intermediary until a roofing repair professional can come out to your home.

Push the shingle or plywood. Isolate areas when you run the hose. Trowel the roofing tar into the leak on the underside of the roof deck using a putty knife.
